Merriweather has big Monday for Pinson Valley
By Gary Lloyd
Most people complain about Mondays.
Pinson Valley senior guard Marcus Merriweather doesn’t.
Here’s how Merriweather’s Monday went:
On Monday afternoon, the senior guard was named the player of the week by the Birmingham Tipoff Club. Former Georgia Tech basketball coach Bobby Cremins was the guest speaker. Cremins stressed the importance of practicing free throws. Cremins asked Merriweather about his free throw shooting, which Merriweather performs at an 86 percent clip.
On Monday night, Merriweather scored 19 points and knocked down the game-winning free throw in a 57-56 win over Center Point that claimed the Class 5A, Area 11 tournament championship for Pinson Valley, its first since 2002.
“It feels like we just won a championship, which we just did,” Merriweather said after the game.
Merriweather was also named the tournament’s MVP.
“Marcus is a catalyst. He’s the engine,” said Pinson Valley head coach Clint Argo. “We all feed off of him. Every game that he has played outstanding we’ve been on the top side of. He’s a heck of a player. He’s one of those kids you’re going to miss when he’s gone because of what he brings to your team.”
Pinson Valley’s first area tournament championship since 2002 is important to Merriweather.
“It feels great,” Merriweather said. “We made history at Pinson Valley and I’m proud to be a part of the team that did that. It’s a great feeling right now.”
