Former Clay-Chalkville standout pitcher Trent Higginbotham reports to spring training Monday.
Higginbotham, part of the Minnesota Twins organization, will report to Fort Myers, Fla.
Higginbotham was drafted in the 26th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. He spent last year with the rookie-league Gulf Coast League Twins, where he appeared in 14 games and struck out 15 batters in 23 1/3 innings. He had a 7.71 earned run average, a 1-2 record and two saves.
When Higginbotham was drafted, he chose to forgo a college career at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa.
“There’s not a kid, or a man for that case, that ever played baseball in their life that some time or the other didn’t dream about playing professional baseball, so this is a big, big deal,” Clay-Chalkville head baseball coach Brandon Johnson said at the time Higginbotham was drafted. “There’s not a lot of guys that get that opportunity. We’re super excited for him.”
