Pinson Valley was shut out 2-0 in Wednesday’s Jefferson County Tournament championship against Gardendale at Birmingham-Southern College.

The Indians finished second in the 12-team tournament with a record of 4-1.

Senior Bailey Chesser pitched 5 1/3 innings for Class 5A No. 8 Pinson Valley (11-6), allowing one hit and one earned run.

Pinson Valley managed just three hits — from Tyler Evans, Scott Falkinburg and Josh Hines.

Of Pinson Valley’s 17 games so far this season, 11 have been against Class 6A schools. The team is 2-2 against Class 6A teams in the Alabama Sports Writers Association top 10, including 1-1 against top-ranked Smiths Station.

First-year head coach Shane Chappell said playing top-tier teams will help the team come playoff time.

“I think it challenges us early on,” Chappell said. “I think we have a team that can compete at that level. I really do. That’s why we schedule those games.”
