Gray to lead Cougar runningbacks

By Alex Headley

Returning fullback Kantarrious Gray is set to lead the Cougar offense this season. According to head coach Jerry Hood, the senior can bench press 330 pounds and is a “heck of a football player”.

Gray has just returned to Clay after attending a summer camp in Arkansas.

“He runs very well.” Hood said. “He is getting some quality looks for recruitment. He brings an awful lot to the table.”

Rounding out the running backs for the Cougars are sophomore Sidney Battle, Brandon Cain, Chris Marshall, Terrell West and Stephon Sheffield.

“Battle and Gray will be leading the pack, but everyone but Sheffield has seen some varsity play.” Hood said.

Battle, at tailback, is just a sophomore but played back-up for Marcus Reaves, the teams star runner from last season.

“He has a bright future.” Hood said.

Cain, Marshall, West and Sheffield are the top reserves. “I feel good about the running backs.” Hood said. “They will be a major part of our gameplan.”

Hood said he could neither describe the team as primarily offensive or primarily defensive.“Both the offense and the defense are very solid. We are just kind of weird, but will do whatever it takes.” He said.

Hood is looking forward to starting the season and to move on from the forfeitures last season.

“We aren’t going to sit around and sing sad songs about the forfeiture.” Hood said.  “This team has a fresh start and will make their own reputation. Last year won’t make a difference. We are moving forward from it.”
