Jackson Capps is a well known talent in the Trussville area, having won talent competitions and playing and singing for several events at a variety of venues. But the secret is out and now everyone knows what the locals have known for a while. This boy can play and sing with the best of them. Capps’ fame is no longer limited to Trussville and the surrounding area. Last Friday night, the 12 year old made the big time stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
Capps took the stage with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives as backup. Jackson played and sang Marty Stuart and Connie Smith’s song “Farmer’s Blues,” receiving a long standing ovation from the sold-out Opry crowd at its conclusion.
Jackson has been a fan of Marty Stuart’s number one television show on RFD-TV since it first aired, teaching himself how to play both Marty’s “Farmer’s Blues” and Kenny Vaughan’s “Okolona, TN” from watching the show and rewinding those episodes over and over on the DVR until he got it right.
In May of 2012, Jackson took a sightseeing break at Manuel’s in between playing gigs at Tootsie’s and Rippy’s in Nashville, TN to see the beautiful clothes country music stars wear at their appearances; coincidentally, Marty Stuart, Jackson’s hero, walked into Manuel’s at the same time. The rest is history. Marty Stuart was very kind to Jackson, mailing him a package within three days of their meeting. In turn, Jackson sent Marty a thank you note and his own package.
“At the Grand Ole Opry backstage Friday night, Marty recognized Jackson immediately and thanked him for the package,” said his mother, Tonya Capps. “Jackson asked him to autograph his guitar but ended up playing “Farmer’s Blues” for him, and the next thing we knew, Jackson was excitedly standing backstage with an autographed guitar, waiting to play onstage with Marty and the band!”
Jackson said he is grateful to Marty Stuart for that experience on July 20 and feels like it is the beginning of something big.
In a thank you letter Jackson wrote to Marty Sunday, Jackson said, “You have changed my life.”
