It’s called “fuelperks,” and it has left some Shell customers confused and others excited
. Pumping gas does not usually include using the Winn-Dixie card. But now, at participating gas stations, inserting the Winn-Dixie Rewards Card before pumping the gas takes pennies off for each gallon and dollars off the total.
Here’s how it works: for every $50 spent at Winn-Dixie using the Winn-Dixie Reward Card, five cents per gallon is deducted off the price of the next fuel purchase when the Winn-Dixie Rewards Card is inserted at the pump.
It’s like the grocery store is giving their customers gas money. Usually, a card with a magnet strip is for paying, not receiving money.
“I’m addicted to going to the grocery store just to get the fuelperks,” Trussville resident Pam Black said. “The first time I used my fuelperks at the gas station, I paid $2.20 a gallon.”
If a customer has enough credits that the amount of discount per gallon they have on the Winn-Dixie Reward Card is more than the price of the gas, the balance is held over until their next fuel purchase.
Winn-Dixie keeps up with the credit balance, but customers can view their balance on the grocery store’s website at www.winndixie.com.
Fuelperks expire the month after they are earned, so fuelperks earned in a September grocery bill will expire the last day of October. The discount only applies up to 20 gallons of fuel purchased at one time.
Additionally, “bonus” grocery items will earn extra fuelperks. The Winn-Dixie website lists these bonus items, which change every week. On Sept. 21, the list included Align probiotics with 25 cents credit per gallon, 2-liter Pompeian extra virgin olive oil with 10 cents credit per gallon, and 40 other products. Stacking up the credits on multiple grocery bills in a month is where the gas bill ends up being dollars less.
“There is no limit to the discount per gallon…” the Winn-Dixie website states.
In Trussville, the participating stations, according to the Winn-Dixie website, are the Shell next to Pizza Hut, the Shell next to AAMCO Transmission, the Shell close to I-459 with a Wendy’s restaurant inside, and the Shell station at the corner of Deerfoot Parkway. In Clay, the Shell station across from Hardee’s is participating, according to Winn-Dixie’s website.
