Sheriff’s detectives have identified a suspect in a pair of weekend robberies and a shooting that left a man critically injured and linked him to other robbery cases, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
“On Friday Oct. 19, a masked subject robbed the Winn-Dixie supermarket on Old Springville Road,” the report said. “About 30 minutes after that robbery the same suspect robbed Roger’s Convenience Store in Clay. In the second robbery a customer was shot after chasing the suspect from the store on foot. The suspect fled in an unknown vehicle.”
According to reports, the suspect is a 38-year-old Remlap man. The victim of the shooting in Clay is listed in stable condition at this time.
On Saturday Oct. 20, investigators received information from authorities in Blount County that a man had fallen from a cliff and been critically injured. He had crawled to a nearby home to get help. They found items in his vehicle that led them to believe he may have been involved on these robberies. The man was transported to a Birmingham hospital.
Detectives executed search warrants on the subject’s vehicle and his residence. Evidence was found that links him to the robberies. Detectives also found evidence linking the man to an Oct. 15 robbery of Tyner’s Pharmacy in the 5600 block of Chalkville Mountain Road where narcotics were taken and an earlier robbery of Roger’s Convenience Store. He is also a suspect in robberies in Blount County and the city of Birmingham.
The suspect remains in the hospital. He suffered a broken back and the loss of one of his legs in the fall. He told detectives that he was hit by a car, but has refused to speak to answer further questions. The investigation is ongoing and the results will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.
The name of the man is being withheld pending formal charges. He is expected to be charged for several armed robberies in the jurisdictions mentioned, the report said
