Cunningham still deciding on future
By Alex Headley
Zach Cunningham, Pinson Valley’s star linebacker, has a lot of options when it comes to college. It seems like, with the help of Indian head coach Matt Glover, he has narrowed it down to a couple of options. According to Glover, Cunningham-a four star recruit- is considering the University of Alabama and Oregon as his top two picks.
“He has visited with Oregon twice and liked it,” Glover said. “They like him a lot and say they will come to a decision by January, maybe sooner.”
Likewise, Vanderbilt is considering offering Cunningham a full scholarship
.
“They are still kind of considering.” Glover said.
But Cunningham’s top pick, the University of Alabama, has only given him an unofficial gray shirt offer.
“Zach is an Alabama fan; it’s just that a gray shirt is just their word, it’s not a guarantee. Zach is smart and understands that.”
Cunningham has plenty of time left to make his decision and according to Glover is patiently waiting to see what happens next.
“Nobody is rushing him into anything,” Glover said. “We are kind of waiting to see who gets the Auburn job and to see how things go at Tennessee.”
Both the Auburn Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers have made offers to Cunningham but both schools are currently searching for a new head coach.
While he waits, Cunningham will be traveling to Anaheim, California to play for the East in the Semper Fidelis Under Armor game.
“Good things are happening for Zach,” Glover said. “He just needs to figure out what school he really wants and go from there.”
The 6’4 200 pound Cunningham had a tremendous season with the Indians this year. Glover has spoken highly of him after nearly every game.
“He is very consistent and gets the job done,” Glover said. “Zack is the best football player in the state. I really believe it. I don’t know what we are going to do without 34 next season.”
Cunningham had 194 tackles for the season, one interception, 12 sacks and two touchdowns.
