What started as a holiday project found its way to a personal business for one Trussville resident. Adam Little is using his talents to not only make a mark on the local artistic front, but he is also extending these talents to reach others in ministry.
“I made myself a nativity for my yard two years ago,” he said. “ It received a good deal of interest and I ended up making quite a few in the following weeks.”
Little, an ’02 Hewitt-Trussville graduate, has a degree in art and a knack for woodwork. The hand-made nativity proved to be a small project that gained a large amount of interest.
“The nativity scenes were very popular,” he said. “Although the nativity scene proved to be a little problematic, as clients only wanted to order them right before Christmas.”
He began making hand-carved crosses for the Christmas holiday and also found the vision to begin sharing ministry and art with others in his church and local communities.
“I prayed about something I could make that would be a ministry to those who purchased it, as well as their friends and family that would see it displayed,” Little said. “A cross seemed like the perfect answer. I wanted it to be something that could not only hang on someone’s front door, but that could be the centerpiece of a family’s living room.”
The small side project, which Little started while working full time designing homes, is now his full time focus and passion. Little’s company, MiHi (Made in His image) Designs, was created last February, focusing mainly on designing and creating one-of-a-kind crosses.
“I wanted the designs to be set apart from the others I had seen while looking through various styles,” he said. “About 90 percent of the projects I do are stacked wooden crosses with iron, ceramic and other material as the top accent crosses.”
Little said the finished product is the reward, but he truly appreciates the entire carving process.
“I love seeing the transformation from the raw materials to the completed cross,” he said.
While the majority of orders placed are for customized wooden crosses, Little also makes wooden letters and symbols.
“I really enjoy taking the vision that clients present to me and implementing ideas of my own to create the finished products,” he said
