The city of Clay School Committee needs reading volunteers for its recently launched Cougars Reading Success Program.
The volunteers would be working with grades K-3, assisting the teaching staff to reach the children who find reading challenging.
The program’s goal is to work in Clay Elementary and Chalkville Elementary schools. The committee estimates that it will need “sufficient” volunteers to staff 15 30-minute slots per week at each school. The goal is to build a pool of 45-60 volunteers for each school. Sixty volunteers per school would allow each school to have one reading session every four weeks.
The committee is asking for anyone with a commitment to help, and special training is not required. Helping these children get a solid start in reading is crucial to their development, according to the committee
