With the news that Solid Rock Church is planning a move to a new facility, city leaders in Pinson are taking a hard look at the possibility of purchasing the historic structure known as the rock school.
According to an announcement on the mayor’s Facebook page, the matter will be discussed at Thursday’s council meeting and public input is welcome.
“The City Council of the City of Pinson will welcome and receive comments during the final portion of our meeting next Thursday, February 7th, 2013, concerning whether the City of Pinson should explore the purchase of the Old Rock School for municipal and civic purposes,” the announcement says. “As many of you have seen, Solid Rock Church has posted the school property, along with Triangle Park, for sale. The comment portion of our meeting will be after other regular business has concluded, which should be around 7:30pm. We will welcome comments at that time.”
According to the Solid Rock Church website, ” The Old Rock School is a historical building. Parts of the facility were built in 1921 by local residents. Over the years, the school system added many classrooms as well as a gym and cafeteria
. After many years, the buildings began to become neglected and finally in the late 1980s it was closed down.” The church has occupied the building since 2004.
