Clay-Chalkville Middle School seventh-grader Harrison Hornsby has been awarded the Young Composers Award
.
Hornsby was given the award at the Alabama Music Educators Association conference in January. The award recognizes student composers from kindergarten through college.
Hornsby was the youngest statewide winner in this year’s competition, said his teacher, Meredith DeVore.
DeVore said Hornsby began writing music over the summer and came to her at the beginning of the school year with a piano solo he had written, called “Piano Sonata, No. 1.” Hornsby is currently working on several more compositions.
“I was amazed at its complexity and maturity,” DeVore said.
Hornsby sings in the choir and is involved in music outside of school at church. He also takes piano and guitar lessons.
