Senior first baseman Will Pharis was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead Hewitt-Trussville to an 8-3 win over Clay-Chalkville on Wednesday night at Phil English Field.
Hewitt-Trussville moves to 5-1 on the season with the win, while Clay-Chalkville falls to 4-1.
Senior outfielder Jasen White was 2-for-2 for Hewitt-Trussville with an RBI and three runs scored. He walked twice and stole two bases. Senior Connor Cox had a double and a run scored, and junior Reid Gunter was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Senior left-handed pitcher Bill Brown pitched 3 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits. He struck out six Clay-Chalkville batters. Senior Matthew Gatewood pitched the remaining 3 2/3 and allowed no hits and no runs. He struck out four.
Junior right-hander Hayden Moore took the loss for Clay-Chalkville, allowing seven earned runs on six hits in six innings
. He struck out 10 batters and walked seven.
Sophomore Tyler Duke was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Senior Jordan Rutter had an RBI walk that scored junior Darius Baldwin and Moore scored on a pass ball. The Cougars got all three of their runs in the fourth inning.
Hewitt-Trussville will travel to Clay-Chalkville for a 4:30 p.m. game Friday. The junior varsity rivals will play after the varsity game.
