A Trussville disc golf course expected to re-open last week will now open March 23.
The Greg Carter Memorial Disc Golf Course, located in the Trussville Sports Complex, was expected to re-open Saturday. The course has been closed since September 2012, when Trussville Mayor Gene Melton instructed Trussville Parks and Recreation to remove the disc golf baskets until a portion of the greenways project was completed.
State officials had stopped work on a portion of the greenways project after being notified that there might have been archeological artifacts within the construction site, which is north of Cherokee Drive and extends to the baseball fields in the sports complex.
The John LeMaster Memorial Disc Golf Course at Civitan Park remains closed due to work on the greenways. The greenway includes a walking trail that will stretch from Civitan Park to the sports complex and has been in the works since 1998. The project is funded with a federal grant and administered by the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Tim Keith, a disc golf player who works with Trussville Parks and Recreation, said holes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 of the Greg Carter Memorial Disc Golf Course have been eliminated and more have been added to the back nine area of the 18-hole course.
“It’s actually going to work out better than I thought,” Keith said
