The No. 9 Hewitt-Trussville baseball team will host Mountain Brook in the first round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs Friday.
Hewitt-Trussville (26-10, 7-1 Class 6A, Area 12) will host Class 6A, Area 11 runner-up Mountain Brook at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday at Phil English Field. Should a third game be necessary, it will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Hewitt-Trussville earlier this month won the Class 6A, Area 12 championship, its first area title since the late 1990s.
Hewitt-Trussville won at Mountain Brook 13-6 in an early March matchup. The Huskies totaled 15 hits in the game, highlighted by senior Jasen White’s 3-for-5 effort with three RBIs. Senior Brent Robson also had three hits and two RBIs, and senior Dakota Harwell picked up two hits and three RBIs.
Should the Huskies get past the Spartans in the first round, they will face the winner of the Vestavia Hills vs. Gardendale series next weekend in the second round
.
Hewitt-Trussville has won seven of its last 10 games entering the playoffs, losing to Pinson Valley, Gardendale and Southside-Gadsden. In its final three wins of the regular season over Carver and Oxford, Hewitt-Trussville totaled 35 runs to just six for its opponents.
“We don’t have to play any different,” Harwell said of the regular season compared to the playoffs. “As coach (Jeff) Mauldin says, ‘It’s just another game.’ If we play loose and with high energy, we will be hard to beat.”
