The Huskies got off to a fast start, sweeping Mountain Brook two games to none to open the baseball playoffs.
Hewitt won the defensive struggle in game one, squeaking out a 1-0 win. The nightcap, however, was an offensive explosion for the Huskies as they plated 15 runs to the Spartan’s three.
Game 1
In game one, Hewitt-Trussville’s looked to get the offense started quickly as they loaded the bases in the first inning. That brought number four hitter Brent Robson to the plate where he was hit by a pitch that would score leadoff hitter Jasen White. White, who had started the game by drawing a walk, staked the Huskies to an early 1-0 lead with his run scored.
That run would be all the Huskies would need as junior right hander Alec Talley kept the Mountain Brook offense off balance all night.
Talley went seven innings on the mound, giving up two hits and no runs, while striking out three batters and walking one batter. One batter was hit by a pitch
.
Mountain Brook starting pitcher Patrick Hubbard settled down after giving up a first inning run and was just as effective, allowing only two base runners after the first inning. Hubbard went seven innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out four batters and walking one.
Game 2
The Huskies’ bats came alive in the evening stanza, but Hewitt head coach Jeff Mauldin also saw his pitcher, Bill Brown, shine on the mound. Brown, a senior, was stellar in game 2 as he went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out six batters.
Hewitt-Trussville’s offense got rolling in the second inning as they would score 3 runs on five hits to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
Riley Stokes, who went 3-5 and had a homerun to go with three RBI and two runs scored, had the big hit in the second with a RBI single to put Hewitt up 2-1.
Conner Cox(2-5 with 1 run scored and 3 RBI) came up big in the third inning when he tripled, scoring two runs to give the Huskies a 8-1 lead. Hewitt sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning.
Junior Riley Stokes who was (3-5 with 1 run scored, 3 RBI and 1 home run) extended Hewitt’s lead to 9-1 with a fourth inning home run to left field, which was his first varsity home run of his career. Dakota Harwell (3-3 with 1 walk, 1 HBP) reached base on all five plate appearances. Harwell doubled in the seventh and scored the final run to finish off the scoring at 15-3.
The Huskies will host Vestavia Hills in round two after the Rebels swept Gardendale in their opening series.
