The Trussville City Board of Education last week approved of creating a principal position for the Alternative Learning Center on Parkway Drive.
Trussville City Schools Director of Student Services Bill Hamilton, the center’s program supervisor, requested at last month’s board retreat that the school board consider creating the position.
The center is located in the old Hewitt-Trussville Junior High School on Parkway Drive.
Hamilton said discipline is “very well handled” at the alternative learning center, but an on-site administrator is needed as the center continues to grow

Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Jefferson County Schools, Hoover and Shelby County all have principals for their alternative schools.
“We’re growing and evolving,” said Trussville City Schools Superintendent Pattie Neill.
School board member Danny Garrett said he was “very concerned” about safety, but Hamilton said a school resource officer will be operating from the center.
Hamilton said the position would cover being the principal and building administrator, something that covers all aspects of the program.
“It will grow and grow,” Neill said. “I know it will grow.”
Seven teachers are based at the alternative learning center — four for credit recovery, two aides and one for discipline.
The school board also approved of posting job descriptions for a guidance secretary and facilities coordinator. The facilities coordinator position, listed at www.trussvillecityschools.com, shows a salary schedule between $68,857 and $79,200.
