The city of Trussville is “hoping” to start a gymnastics academy in the near future, Trussville City Councilman Buddy Choat said last week.
The Trussville City Council last Tuesday approved $7,700 to purchase gymnastics equipment. The equipment is being purchased from Tom Brown for $3,500 and from Jefferson County Community Education for $4,200.
Trussville Parks and Recreation Director David Vinson said the equipment, if bought new, would cost between $90,000 and $100,000.
“It’s in pretty good condition,” Vinson said.
Choat said it’s a good opportunity for the city of Trussville. Trussville City Council President Brian Plant said a gymnastics program would “really add” to the offerings for young people in Trussville.
There are currently about 120 kids in a youth tumbling program at the Trussville Civic Center, Vinson said.
The equipment the city purchased will likely be stored at the old Hewitt-Trussville Middle School gymnasium on Parkway Drive, the former Gold Kist chicken processing plant on Will Pond Road or the old community center on Parkway Drive until a permanent place is found.
