Clay will receive three police cars from the city of Irondale, it was announced at Monday’s Clay City Council meeting.
While this will not be enough cars to offer around-the-clock response, it’s a step in the right direction, Councilman Ricky Baker said. The cars will have to be stripped of Irondale’s insignia, and converted for deputy use in Clay, a process that may take two weeks.
“We will have more reserve deputies on the streets in the next two or three weeks,” Baker said.
Council members agreed that additional deputy presence is needed as the city grows, something they hope happens soon. The council hopes to annex the nearby Millington neighborhood on Chalkville Mountain Road. The Committee on Community Development and Annexations has sent 87 letters to Millington residents, and have already received several responses, Councilman Mark Halstead said.
It was also announced that the first tournament at Clay’s frisbee disc golf course will be Aug. 10. The official opening date has not yet been announced. Some baskets still need to be installed and debris needs to be cleared from parts of the field, but a lot of the work is expected to be completed by the end of this week.
