Three karate students from Trussville won medals at the USA National Karate Federation’s national competition in Greenville, S.C., earlier this month.
Mary Elizabeth Reeves won a gold medal — making her a national champion — and two bronze medals. Alex Tran won a silver medal and Anna Elizabeth Swatzell won a bronze medal. Kalen Kennedy also competed in the competition.
“Our team is proud to bring back home five medals,” said Michele Perkins, the students’ instructor at Japan International Karate Academy.
More than 1,000 competitors from all over the United States and world participated in the event.
“The team has been diligently training for the last year in preparation for this event,” Perkins said. “I am very proud of our team. “We have been well represented by these young athletes.”
