GARDENDALE — Hewitt-Trussville head football coach Hal Riddle says the Huskies are looking good at the quarterback position.
He just doesn’t know which one to choose.
“We’re looking good,” Riddle said.
Senior Blake Bailey and sophomore Zach Thomas are battling out for the starting spot. Riddle said there is no preset time for when a starter will be named. Hewitt-Trussville faces Pinson Valley on Aug. 23 in a jamboree game and opens the season at Clay-Chalkville on Aug. 30.

Hewitt-Trussville’s Hal Riddle will begin his 12th season as the Huskies’ head football coach this season. Of his 145 career wins, 74 have come at Hewitt-Trussville.

Bailey is a transfer from rival Clay-Chalkville. Bailey was Hayden Moore’s backup a season ago, completing 6-of-13 passes for 38 yards and three touchdowns to zero interceptions. Riddle said Bailey did not participate in spring drills due to playing baseball. He throws the ball “extremely well” and has good experience, Riddle said.
Thomas is an “extremely talented” quarterback with a good arm and who runs the ball well, Riddle said.
“Those guys are competing a little bit,” he said. “We like that position right now. We’re just not settled yet.”
