The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Trussville is hosting its first annual Friends of the Poor Walk to assist families in need in Trussville and the surrounding area on Sept. 28.
Registration on Sept. 28 will be at 8 a.m., followed by the walk at Trussville Springs at 9 a.m.
The Friends of the Poor Walk has been a national program since 2008 and has grown each year. In 2012, more than 19,000 walkers in 220 locations across the United States raised $1.8 million. While it is an international organization, support and management is local and 100 percent of monies raised by the event will be used for area families.
This will be the first year for the event in Birmingham area. The walk route features a ¾-mile paved trail, as well as a 1 1/2 mile path along the Cahaba River. Other walk locations in Alabama include Huntsville, Florence and Mobile.
