A Hewitt-Trussville High School senior earned a bronze medal in the 2013 Summer Deaflympics in Bulgaria over the weekend.
Andrew Patterson won bronze in Friday’s 66kg freestyle wrestling competition over Gurbanberdi Charyyev of Turkmenistan.
Patterson reached the third-place match by defeating Uzbekistan’s Abdurakhmon Sattorov in his first match. He then was defeated by Plamen Donchev of Bulgaria.
Patterson qualified for the Deaflympics by winning the 2013 USA Deaflympic Freestyle Wrestling Qualifier in Virginia in April. He won the freestyle and Greco Roman competitions at the qualifier.
Patterson was coached in Bulgaria by Thad Ferguson and in Alabama by Alabama Wrestling Club’s Jake Elkins, a former Hewitt-Trussville wrestler.
