Trussville police as well as Trussville Fire and Rescue personnel are on the scene of a drowning on the Cahaba River just north of Happy Hollow Road. Fire Chief Russell Ledbetter placed the scene of the accident approximately one half mile upstream of the Happy Hollow bridge.
The body of a deceased white male was recovered in the river, according to city officials.
Ledbetter said the victim is a 17-year-old male and that there were five males inner tubing in the river.
The boy is from Trussville.
Police Chief Don Sivley said the call came in this afternoon that someone had been riding an inner tube down the river and had been trapped under water.
“We don’t have a lot of details at this time,” Sivley said. “From what I understand, some people were going down the Cahaba on inner tubes, went over the rapids and one of them went under. He was trapped under some rocks for 40 to 45 minutes.”
An official from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is on the scene.
