Fox 6 News and ABC 33/40 are reporting a “large aircraft crash” near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport occurred early Wednesday morning.
According to reports, the crash scene is near Huffman Road and Airport Road, but not within the airport fence area. Police are currently closing roads near the scene of the crash.
Airport spokesperson Toni Herrera-Bast confirmed to both television stations that a large cargo plane crashed around 5 a.m.
An ABC 33/40 photographer is reporting that the cargo plane is a UPS aircraft.
Media sources are reporting multiple explosions at the time of the crash. Sources have confirmed that there were two pilots aboard the airplane.
Sources tell ABC 33/40 that there are 2 fatalities in this crash. The bodies were found approximately 100 yards from fuselage.
