The battle for the starting quarterback job at Hewitt-Trussville is likely to come to an end Monday, Huskies head coach Hal Riddle said Friday night.
“I think we’re going to look at the film, and then we’re going to have to make a decision probably Monday,” Riddle said after Friday’s jamboree against Pinson Valley.
Senior Blake Bailey, a Clay-Chalkville transfer, started the varsity game for Hewitt-Trussville. He completed 4-of-10 passes for 21 yards and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the game.
Sophomore quarterback Zach Thomas completed his only passing attempt for 16 yards and rushed three times for seven yards.
In the junior varsity game, Thomas completed 2-of-3 passes for 17 yards. He rushed for touchdowns of 36 and 82 yards.
Last season at Clay-Chalkville, Bailey completed 6-of-13 passes for 38 yards and three touchdowns to zero interceptions in a backup role.
Riddle has noted Bailey’s ability to pass the ball and Thomas’ ability to run the ball as strong points for each quarterback.
Hewitt-Trussville opens the 2013 regular season Friday at rival Clay-Chalkville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
