The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Monday approved a permit to begin construction of the first 1.3-mile segment of the 52-mile Northern Beltline.
Spokeswoman Lisa Parker said the permit was signed by the applicant — the Alabama Department of Transportation — and the Corps.
This news is expected to be announced by Gov. Robert Bentley in Gardendale today. Bentley’s press secretary Jennifer Ardis Tweeted this morning that there would be a “major transportation announcement” today in Gardendale.
The first segment of the project will connect Alabama Highway 75 with Alabama Highway 79 north of Pinson.
The Northern Beltline is projected to take about 30 to 35 years to complete.
The 52-mile expressway would extend from the Interstate 20/59-459 junction in Bessemer to Interstate 59 north of Trussville.
