State Sen. Cam Ward, who represents District 14, which includes parts of Bibb, Shelby, Chilton and Jefferson counties, said Wednesday he will not seek the sixth district seat to be vacated by Spencer Bachus next year.
Bachus announced last week that he will not seek reelection in 2014. Bachus has served the sixth district of Alabama for 11 terms. The sixth district includes parts of Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Coosa, Jefferson and Shelby counties.
“I am honored to be regarded as a potential candidate in the race to succeed my former boss Rep. Bachus in Alabama’s 6th Congressional seat,” Ward said in a statement. “The outpouring of support has been both overwhelming and humbling. But, in 2014 I will stand for re-election to the Alabama Senate as planned.”
Ward said he looked forward to continuing public service.
“I am excited about the challenges and opportunities that are ahead of me in the State Senate,” he said. “I will continue to tackle the problems facing our state with an attitude that anything is possible if we dedicate the time and energy to solving these issues.”
