Former Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball standout Justin Tubbs is gearing up to play this season with the Ottowa SkyHawks of the National Basketball League of Canada.
The SkyHawks open their inaugural season Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. against the Windsor Express at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottowa, Ontario.
Tubbs was signed by the SkyHawks Aug. 29. The 6-foot-3, 203-pound guard played collegiately at the University of Alabama and East Tennessee State University. In his senior season at ETSU, Tubbs averaged 10.5 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per contest. In 2012, Tubbs played for the Sauk Valley Predators of the PBL in Illinois. Tubbs, a 2006 Hewitt-Trussville High School graduate, also played professional basketball in Israel last season.
At the time of Tubbs’ signing, Ottowa SkyHawks head coach Kevin Keathley said, “Justin is one of the most athletically gifted players I’ve came across in my coaching career. He has a combination of athleticism, strength, speed and quickness that is tough to find on any level of the game. Justin will be a true weapon on the offensive and defensive end for our SkyHawks basketball team. He will be one of the more exciting players to watch in person in NBL Canada this season.”
Tubbs has been featured in SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays three times in one season, twice commanding the top spot.
