CLAY — Hewitt-Trussville scored nine of the game’s final 13 points and won 63-58 at Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday.
Trailing 56-54 with 2:22 to play, Hewitt-Trussville senior guard Jarvis Calhoun connected on a 3-pointer to give the Huskies (2-0) a one-point lead. Senior Connor Murrell then made a layup for Hewitt-Trussville, followed almost immediately by a basket by Clay-Chalkville’s Edward Leggett. Calhoun made two free throws with 24 seconds left and senior DeMarcus Kelly stole a Clay-Chalkville inbounds pass to seal the win.
“This team has a lot of courage,” said Hewitt-Trussville head coach Mike Dutton.
Hewitt-Trussville connected on 16 of its 25 free throw attempts. Clay-Chalkville made 21 of 29 from the charity stripe.
Calhoun led Hewitt-Trussville with 17 points. Senior Will McCullough scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior point guard Carter Pharis scored 10 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished four assists. Murrell scored nine points, seven of which came in the final 3:34.
For Clay-Chalkville (1-2), junior point guard Hasan Abdullah led all scorers with 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Junior forward Martin Reed scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior forward Sean Burrell chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
