CLAY — The Clay-Chalkville varsity boys and girls basketball teams advanced in the first round of the Jefferson County Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.
The boys defeated McAdory 72-62. Brian Clark scored 18 points, and Martin Reed and Kam Prewitt scored 13 points each. Sean Burrell scored 11 points, and Hasan Abdullah scored 10 points and handed out 10 assists. Clay-Chalkville (18-7) faces Shades Valley on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Center Point. The winner moves on to the championship game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Clay-Chalkville girls beat Minor 63-33 behind 17 points from Kristian Hudson, and 16 points each from Bria Bethea and Raven Omar. The Lady Cougars (20-5) face Gardendale on Thursday at 5 p.m. at home. The winner advances to Friday’s championship game at 6:30 p.m.
Pinson Valley’s girls beat Mortimer Jordan 59-53 in the tournament’s opening round. The Lady Indians (7-15) face top-seeded Shades Valley today at 7:30 p.m. at Clay-Chalkville. Pinson Valley’s boys fell to Minor 58-48 in the tournament’s opening round. The Indians (14-8) will play Hueytown today at 4:30 p.m. at Center Point.
In Class 6A, Area 12 play, the Hewitt-Trussville varsity girls won at Carver-Birmingham 49-40. Morgan McLain led the Lady Huskies (14-9, 3-2) with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Leigh McAnally scored nine points, Cayla Dillard scored eight and Skylar Reaves added six points.
The Hewitt-Trussville varsity boys fell 54-44 at Carver-Birmingham. James Huguley and Austin Seeley both scored 11 points for the Huskies (14-8, 3-2).
