BIRMINGHAM — Main Street Alabama is seeking three communities for a downtown revitalization program.
The organization announced three application workshops throughout the state: Decatur on March 12, Montgomery on March 18 and Mobile on March 19. Each workshop is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
During these workshops, communities will become familiar with the criteria for becoming a Main Street Alabama Designated Community and will explore the assistance Main Street Alabama can offer in making their downtown revitalization program successful.
After the workshop, communities interested in pursuing the Main Street Alabama program must submit a letter of intent by March 30, an application by May 1 and an oral presentation May 15. The selection announcement is June 2.
Being selected as one of the three new Main Street Alabama Designated Communities means support from Main Street Alabama including board training, public visioning process, strategic planning, market analysis and creation of economic development strategies specific to that community.
Main Street Alabama focuses on bringing jobs, dollars and people back to Alabama’s historic communities.
The Trussville City Council last year adopted a new downtown master plan that involves a major redesign of downtown Trussville, with the primary focus being placed on road construction and commercial property. The project span extends from Kay Avenue on the west side of downtown to the Cahaba River on the east side. It also extends north of U.S. Highway 11 to Hewitt Street and down to the railroad tracks on the south side of downtown.
