PINSON — Pinson Elementary School hosted its first reading fair this year Jan. 27-30.
Students were able to spend time working on their projects from Thanksgiving until Jan. 24. First and second grade students were given the opportunity to enter projects in an individual category. Kindergarten, first and second grade classes were given the opportunity to compete in a class project category.
The projects were based on a favorite book and were required to include information about the title, author, publisher and publication date, main characters, setting, plot summary, conflict, solution, author’s purpose and tone. The projects were presented on a tri-fold board and could be decorated with any materials in order to draw attention to the project and represent the chosen book.
There were 24 projects submitted. The projects were judged Jan. 27 by three non-school affiliated judges who have multiple years of experience with libraries, teaching and reading standards. There were separate winners in each of the grade levels for individual projects and one set of winners for class projects.
In first grade, Mackenzie Wilson won. Second place went to Genesis Reyes, third place went to Harmony Sorrell and Angelo Gonzalez was named honorable mention.
In second grade, Lily Herrod won first place. Nia Ervin was second, Malachi Larue was third and honorable mention went to Zachary Matthews and Caroline Wilder.
In the class projects category, Brooklynn Galloway’s class won. Second place went to Amelia Evans’ class and third place went to Carol Herren’s class.
Projects were displayed with winner ribbons at Pinson Elementary School’s annual Literacy Night on Feb. 20.
