ARGO — The Argo City Council on Wednesday morning voted 4-2 to increase the city’s sales tax.
The city’s portion of sales tax increases from 3 percent to 4 percent, making it 10 percent overall.
Councilmen Bill Rutledge and Scott Como voted against the tax.
Mayor Paul Jennings said the increase projects at $97,000 in additional sales tax revenue per fiscal year. Jennings said he plans to designate $50,000 of the city’s revenues to pay on a $1 million line of credit in order to invest in long-term city projects, such as road improvements, city park upgrades and possibly designating property that could in the next 10 to 20 years become the future site of a new high school.
