TRUSSVILLE — Could No. 10 Vestavia Hills at Hewitt-Trussville tonight be the last high school football game at Jack Wood Stadium?
It’s possible.
The targeted date to open the new Hewitt-Trussville Stadium has been Friday, Oct. 3 for some time. Hewitt-Trussville hosts Oak Mountain that night for homecoming. After tonight’s game against Vestavia Hills, the Oak Mountain game is the next home contest on the schedule. Hewitt-Trussville travels to Spain Park and Gadsden City in the second half of September.
Trussville City Schools Superintendent Pattie Neill said there is not a set opening date yet for the new stadium, which is being constructed behind the Trussville Civic Center.
“We are taking it one week at a time to evaluate the progress for opening the stadium,” Neill said in an email.
Construction has been ongoing since last September. Rain has been a large contributor in some of the stadium’s progress being delayed.
Jack Wood Stadium — called Hewitt-Trussville Stadium until it was dedicated to the former head coach in the late 1990s — opened in the late 1940s. The 1948 team was the first to have its team picture taken there. This year’s team was the last to do so.
In May, the final graduation ceremony was held at Jack Wood Stadium, where 367 Hewitt-Trussville High School seniors walked across the stage on the field.
