CLAY — Clay-Chalkville is approaching an impressive state record.
The Cougars have scored 20 or more points in a game for 51 straight games, dating back to Week 3 of the 2010 high school football season, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society.
The state record for most consecutive games scoring 20 or more points is held by Hoover, which accomplished the feat 56 games in a row from 2001 through 2004.
If Clay-Chalkville continues this pace from week to week, it could tie the record Oct. 24 at Gardendale and could break the state record Oct. 31 at Hewitt-Trussville.
During the 51 games Clay-Chalkville has put at least 20 points on the scoreboard, it has eclipsed the 50-point mark in 11 of those games. The Cougars have scored 40 or more points in 22 of those 51 contests, including the 50-plus games.
How close did the streak come to being snapped?
In the fourth game of the streak in 2010, the Cougars managed just 21 points in a loss to Gadsden City. In 2011, Clay-Chalkville’s lowest total points in a game was 28 in a win against Gadsden City. Remember, though, that the Cougars forfeited nine of their 10 games that season due to playing an ineligible player.
In 2012, Clay-Chalkville needed an overtime touchdown to beat Gadsden City 21-14, the 28th game of the streak. The next week that season, Clay-Chalkville lost to Huntsville 21-20. The Cougars then lost 44-20 in the Class 6A semifinals to Hoover, the 35th game of the streak.
Gadsden City beat Clay-Chalkville 24-21 last season, the closest the Cougars have come recently to having the scoring streak snapped.
Clay-Chalkville has scored 1,965 points in the 51 games of totaling 20 points or more, an average of 38.5 points per game.
Clay-Chalkville has also scored at least some points in 121 straight games, a streak that dates back to 2003, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society. The state record for consecutive games scored in is held by T.R. Miller, which has done so in 346 straight games, from 1988 through the first four games of this season.
