TRUSSVILLE — A Hewitt-Trussville Middle School teacher has been published on the iCivics website.
Leigh Stovall had her blog, “The Pursuit of Civic Classroom Happiness,” published at www.icivics.orgThursday.
Stovall discusses how sometimes civic education does not seem important to her seventh-graders and how she tries to make it exciting and interesting. She discusses three online games iCivics provides where students can be the president, develop laws or policies and decide the fate of a trial.
“The games excite them as they experience the power an office,” Stovall wrote. “As they play, they begin to understand how our government is FOR the people and BY the people.”
Stovall has been teaching seventh grade civics and geography in Alabama for six years. A National Board certified teacher, Stovall has been part of the iCivics National Teacher Council since 2011. In 2013, Stovall was selected as one of 23 nationally for the new iCivics Teachers Council for the summer of 2014.
iCivics is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reinvigorating civic learning through interactive and engaging learning resources. The goal is for the organization’s educational resources empower teachers and prepare the next generation of students to become knowledgeable and engaged citizens.
