HUFFMAN — Pinson Valley got a much-needed Class 6A, Region 6 win over Huffman on Friday night at Viking Stadium.
The Indians held on to defeat Huffman 13-7 in a defensive battle. Pinson Valley is now 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the region. Huffman falls to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the region.
Senior Nick Gibson rushed for just over 100 yards and a first-quarter 28-yard touchdown, one of the lone offensive highlights of the night.
Midway through the second quarter, freshman quarterback Jackie Matthews connected with Trey Underwood for a 34-yard touchdown, increasing the Indians’ lead to 13-0.
Huffman added its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Marvin Flowers hit Jamarcus McCoy for a 45-yard strike, making it a 13-7 game.
On fourth-and-12 Flowers threw a 40-yard completion to Jacoby Johnson but the play was brought back because Johnson had stepped out of bounds and was the first to touch the ball. The illegal touching penalty negated the long play and left Huffman one last chance to win the game from about midfield.
With Huffman facing a fourth-and-12 situation, Pinson Valley came up with a sack to preserve the win. Pinson Valley also got two goal line stands from its defense. Huffman had been averaging 34 points per game before the game against Pinson Valley.
