BIRMINGHAM — Older workers in Jefferson and Shelby counties have a chance to update their skills and get job training under a program offered by AARP Foundation and Jefferson State Community College.
The BACK TO WORK 50+ program is designed to help unemployed men and women over the age of 50 update their job-search skills and, in some cases, get short-term job training. At Jefferson State, eligible participants may receive tuition assistance to enroll in training programs that would prepare them to work as dialysis technicians, in medical coding or in office management.
Two sessions will be held next week for those who are interested in learning more. The first will be at the Jefferson Campus at 2601 Carson Road in Birmingham on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will be in Lurleen Wallace Hall Room 300. The other will be held at the Shelby-Hoover Campus at 4600 Valleydale Road in Birmingham on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will be in the Health Sciences Building Room 129D.
“These sessions will also help the participants develop computer skills training, assist them with cover letters and interviewing techniques, and help them to use technology to advance their job search,” said Jefferson State Directory of Community and Corporate Education Kay Potter.
