TRUSSVILLE — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office this week announced charges in the Oct. 27 attempted theft of a gun from Southeastern Guns near Trussville on U.S. Highway 11.
Sgt. Jack Self said Darien Deon Haslip, 20, of Birmingham was charged with second-degree theft of property and possession of a short barrel shotgun.
He posted $20,000 bond and was released from Jefferson County Jail on Oct. 28.
Self said the short barrel shotgun was found in Haslip’s possession upon arrest. Haslip had picked up an AR-15 and walked out of the store with it, Self said.
“The employees went out and held him until law enforcement arrived,” Self said.
Trussville Police Department Capt. Jeff Bridges said there were three or four people in Southeastern Guns on Oct. 27, and one attempted to steal a gun. When employees held him at gunpoint and called authorities, the others who were with the suspect fled in a red car. It was pulled over at Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe in the Trussville city limits, Bridges said.
A gun was found in the vehicle that belonged to the suspect who was being held at Southeastern Guns, Bridges said. One person in the car was found to be in possession of a couple pills and was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, Bridges said.
