CLAY — The Clay-Chalkville varsity girls basketball team got its season under way with a strong showing at Hoover High School for the Hoover Big Orange Classic over the weekend.
After dropping the opening game of the tournament to Class 7A Jeff Davis, 62-58, the Lady Cougars rallied to finish the weekend 3-1 overall, and found a little revenge in the process.
Senior guard Kristian Hudson led Clay-Chalkville offensively for much of the way. Her 28-, 22- and 18-point performances served as team highs in three of the four contests.
However, it was sophomore Raven Omar that took the show in a win over Class 1A Loachapoka on Saturday morning. Omar scored 18 of the Lady Cougars’ 50 points to get past the Indians, 50-37.
Clay-Chalkville quickly took the floor again and downed Class 7A Lee-Montgomery by a count of 67-45.
The final opponent was a familiar one. After losing a close one to Jeff Davis not 24 hours earlier, the Lady Cougars made some defensive adjustments and beat the Volunteers handily, 53-23.
“Our girls all played really hard and were happy to bounce back and beat the team that we had lost to the night before,” said Clay-Chalkville head coach Justin Haynie. “Jeff Davis competes in 7A and they were in the final four last year, so it was a big win for us.”
