TRUSSVILLE — The Hewitt-Trussville boys cross country team came through with a sixth place finish at the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Championships on Saturday at Oakville Indian Mounds Park.
Auburn High School took the first place crown in Class 7A, followed by Hoover, Mountain Brook, Smiths Station, Grissom, Hewitt-Trussville, Fairhope, Baker, Bob Jones and Huntsville.
Coach David Dobbs saw two of his Huskies place in the top 20. Benjamin Knox crossed the finish line at 16:26.36, 35 seconds behind the leader, and Austin Norwood ended his run at 16:42.63.
Knox earned a 15th-place finish, while Norwood finished 19th overall.
Hewitt-Trussville placed five more runners in the top 85. John Ngaruiya finished No. 36 with a time of 17:04.47. Hunter Thomason finished two spots behind at 17:07.03 on the clock.
The 77th runner to cross was Travis Gunn with a time of 17:53.93.
Chase Matthews finished fewer than three seconds after Gunn for a 79th-place finish. Five runners later was Jacob Spruiell, who stopped the clock at 18:02.85.
Although the Lady Huskies didn’t place, Marlee Mason and Mary Caroline Lesley ran well. Mason was the first Hewitt-Trussville runner to cross at 19:55.07, which placed her No. 23 overall. Lesley finished at 20:37.42, 43 spots behind the leader.
