TRUSSVILLE — The demolition of Jack Wood Stadium in Trussville’s Cahaba Project is likely to begin in January, according to Trussville City Schools Superintendent Pattie Neill.
Bids on the demolition are being taken by Trussville City Schools.
The bid opening for the demolition is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.
The demolition project consists of Jack Wood Stadium; as well as a major portion of the existing New Deal-era school building; interior tear-out of interior finishes, ceiling, lighting, plumbing fixture and associated piping; removal and safe disposal of hazard waste in the form of asbestos and lead paint; track field house; and sidewalks of the existing school.
A mandatory pre-bid conference will be Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. at the school on Parkway Drive. Bids will then be received from pre-qualified bidders until 2 p.m. Dec. 18.
Jack Wood Stadium — called Hewitt-Trussville Stadium until it was dedicated to the former head coach in the late 1990s — opened in the late 1940s. The 1948 team was the first to have its team picture taken there. This year’s team was the last to do so.
In May, the final graduation ceremony was held at Jack Wood Stadium, where 367 Hewitt-Trussville High School seniors walked across the stage on the field.
The final varsity football game played in Jack Wood Stadium was a 45-38 Hewitt-Trussville loss to Oak Mountain on Oct. 3.
