CLAY — Clay-Chalkville High School will soon have a career technical center.
Clay Mayor Charles Webster said Tuesday that a 6,000-square-foot career technical center will be constructed on the high school’s campus, likely near the cafeteria. He hopes it will be in place for the 2015-2016 school year.
Webster said the center has been approved by the Jefferson County Board of Education. He estimated it to cost around $500,000.
The center will feature classes on masonry, electrical, carpentry and welding.
“It’s exciting,” Webster said.
A masonry program was started at the high school by Webster earlier this year. The city headed it up and now Jefferson County Schools has taken notice, Webster said.
“That’s come from the city being involved,” he said.
Students already a part of Webster’s program will soon be helping with a significant project in Birmingham.
Bethel Baptist Church was the site of several bombings during the Civil Rights movement. Fred Shuttlesworth served as pastor during those times. The church is now building a courtyard in the footprint of the old house that once stood there.
Webster said he and masonry students from the high school are going to do the work starting next week as their school project.
Jenkins Brick & Tile is donating the brick, Webster said.
