CLAY — Nikita’ Mathews and her 6-year-old daughter, Lee’Anya, have received a great Christmas gift.
Last Wednesday in the Winchester Hills subdivision in Clay, Mathews received the key to her new home, an unveiling two weeks in the making and part of Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity’s “Home for the Holidays.”

Construction started on the home Dec. 3. The dedication ceremony was held Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 10:45 a.m.
“Thank you so much for blessing me with this opportunity,” Mathews said. “Owning my own home will positively change my life by providing a safe, affordable place for me and my daughter. It is truly a wonderful feeling to be able to accomplish something that I didn’t think would be possible this soon. Being able to invest a home is extremely important to me, as well as being able to show my daughter that you can beat the odds and that with God you can accomplish many things in life.”
Mathews was born and raised in Gary, Ind., and graduated from Indiana University with a degree in sociology. She works at Alabama Telco Credit Union as a sales development representative. She and her daughter attend Church of the Highlands, and in her free time Mathews enjoys running, cooking and shopping.
Lee’Anya is in kindergarten at Riverchase Elementary School and is currently taking dance and gymnastics. She enjoys reading, playing outside and watching movies.
