MONTGOMERY — Ty Pigrome is adding hardware to his already-growing collection.
The Clay-Chalkville junior quarterback won the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 6A Back of the Year award in Montgomery on Wednesday, beating out Shades Valley athlete Keith Mixon and Saraland quarterback Chris Weaver.
Pigrome brought home the Class 6A title game MVP with a five-touchdown performance over No. 3 Saraland in the Super 7 finale Dec. 5 in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Pigrome completed 15-of-20 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. His lone interception was on a tipped ball. He rushed 14 times for 101 yards and three touchdowns in the 36-31 win over Saraland.
Pigrome totaled 61 touchdowns in 2014 — 36 passing, 24 rushing and one receiving. He completed 157 of his 234 passes for 2,692 yards and only seven interceptions. Pigrome rushed 145 times for 1,254 yards, an average of 8.6 yards per carry.
Pinson Valley running back Nick Gibson won the Class 5A Back of the Year award for the 2013 season when he was a junior.
