CLAY – Another member of Clay-Chalkville’s secondary is college bound.
Senior cornerback Izzy Bennett became the third Cougar defensive back to pledge for the 2015 signing class when he chose Tuskegee University on Monday.
“Well, all that’s saying is we all were working to get the same thing as a unit, that’s why we had really good team chemistry,” said Bennett of his fellow college-bound teammates.
Bennett played opposite of Kam Prewitt, who is committed to Memphis, in the Clay-Chalkville secondary for two years. They were backed by senior Torrence Willis, who recently pledged with the University of West Alabama, at safety.
Those three, along with first-team All-Tribune safety Jalen Dawson made receptions hard to come by for opposing quarterbacks.
Individually, Bennett recorded five interceptions while adding 43 total tackles and 12 assists. With Prewitt on the other side, he got his fair share of opportunities and took advantage of them with 15 passes broken up.
The senior said that he fell for the overall environment in Tuskegee. The campus felt like home to him, and he was sold.
Bennett believes that he learned valuable lessons in his four years playing under head coach Jerry Hood. Even with all the success – 25-2 as a starter with a Class 6A state championship – Hood taught him to stay humble and motivated to reach his goals.
“One thing I learned at Clay-Chalkville was to stay humble and grind to shine,” Bennett said.
