JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning against a telephone scam.
On the Mountain Brook Police Department Facebook page Wednesday, the department reported it’s taken multiple reports from citizens due to a telephone scam in which someone telephoning and stating that they’re from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The caller states they’re notifying you that a bench warrant is outstanding for your arrest and attempts to make arrangements to meet to satisfy the warrant by cash payment, according to the Facebook post.
Mountain Brook PD reported that this isn’t normal protocol on the execution of any warrant and people shouldn’t meet with anyone making these requests. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has verified this as a scam.
The sheriff’s office on its Facebook page stated it doesn’t do business this way and those who are contacted this way should call 205-325-5900 to verify.
“Never give personal or banking information to someone who contacts you by phone unless you are certain they are legitimate,” the Facebook post states. “If you did not call them first, hang up.”
