HOOVER – No. 3 Hewitt-Trussville kicked off the Class 7A, Area 6 softball tournament with a big 6-5 win over Vestavia Hills on Thursday night.
The Huskies second-place finish in the area during regular season play matched them with the third-place Rebels in the first round of the four-team, double elimination tournament.
Hewitt-Trussville (31-7) scored all of its runs in the first four innings and held on to secure the victory. Vestavia Hills (17-14-1) plated a pair of runs in the final inning, but failed to bring around the potential tying run.
The Huskies picked up 12 base hits on the game, to only five for Vestavia Hills.
Hewitt-Trussville will play tournament host No. 2 Spain Park (6-0 in Area 6) on Friday at 6 p.m. The victor will advance to the championship round, while the loser will play the winner of the matchup between Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills.
