BIRMINGHAM – Following an incident on Friday night at the corner of 44th Street and 12th Court North in Birmingham, detectives are investigating a homicide.
Nicholas Smith, 23, of Birmingham has been identified as the victim. Smith was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital on Saturday.
Officers of the South Precinct responded to an assault call on Friday night around 9 at the above location. Once authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered a blood-soaked sidewalk with no victim in the area.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, its preliminary investigation has found that Smith’s girlfriend, who was accompanied by one of his relatives, picked him up in a 1999 bronze Chrysler before officers arrived.
The trio was stopped for speeding by a patrol officer in the 1600 Block of First Ave. North. Shortly after the stop was made, Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the situation and transported Smith to UAB Hospital, where he died hours later.
